I'd been a semi-frequent user of Wikipedia for several months, while doing research for trivia quizzes that I was writing for another web site, when I discovered (in late October/early November 2003) that I could actually correct the occasional spelling and punctuation mistakes that I came across on this site. I couldn't resist!

A few days after I discovered this ability, I learned of the death of Willie Shoemaker - on this site, oddly enough, in the Recent deaths section. Seeing a mere stub there, instead of a full article, inspired me to contribute my first major revision/article.
