Temple of the Slim Virgin
Temple of the Slim Virgin

I'm a new user, having joined on Nov. 2, 2004. My interests are good writing, the Middle East, terrorism, moral philosophy, theory of mind, psychology, psychoanalysis, ideology, the history of science, human rights and animal liberation.

My user name comes from the Javanese legend of the Slim Virgin, known as Loro Jonggrang.

Legend has it that the Slim Virgin was a princess who promised herself to a suitor if, between sunset and dawn, he would build her a magnificent temple containing 1,000 statues. The suitor called upon genies to help him. Just as they had almost finished, the princess cheated by having her servants make the sounds of early-morning cooking, so that the cocks crowed too soon, and the genies thought it was time to stop and ran away.

In a rage, the suitor turned the Slim Virgin to stone. The statue inside the main Hindu temple in the Javanese Prambanan complex of temples, originally built around 865 AD, is said to be the princess herself.

The moral of the tale is you should define your terms very carefully and don't be a sophist, which I felt was an appropriate message for a Wikipedian's user name.

The Slim Virgin, having learned her lesson, now prizes accuracy and good faith above all.
