Hi there,

My user name is my real name. I'm a 23-year old guy living in Utrecht, The Netherlands. I spend most of my time on doing research related to my master's thesis in psychology, working part-time as a mailman, and reading a lot.

Wikipedia stuff

On Wikipedia, I usually work on articles about psychology and a few other topics, and do some maintenance tasks. As of October 2004, I have a Wikipediholic score of 55, which is said to be healthy. The downside of this is that it will take me a while to complete the stuff that's on my Idea-list

I have compiled a top-1000 list of the most popular articles of Wikipedia. I think it's interesting to browse, just to get an idea of what people are generally interested in.

I have also started a small project to reduce the number of common mistakes in the article space: User:Sietse_Snel/Fix_common_mistakes. The first step is fixing some common typos and spelling mistakes. I would appreciate any help with this, since it will be quite a big task.

Because I wanted to be able to search the Wikipedia database locally, I have developed a little java program called WikiDBSplit. It takes articles from the Wikipedia database file (curtable.sql) and makes a text file of every article. This makes it possible to search the database locally (using tools like grep) if your computer is too slow or has too little memory to use MySQL for querying the database. Running WikiDBSplit generates quite a large amount of files, so you need to have a filesystem that can handle this. I personally use an 'ext2' system generated with the mke2fs '-T news' option, which means that it has enough inodes for many small files. You might want to use something similar if you are splitting a large database. WikiDBSplit is public domain. You can download the source code from here (use save as). Please note that this is the first version of the program and that it has not been tested extensively yet.

Abbreviations of minor edits

Like many other people on Wikipedia, I often use abbreviations to describe my minor edits, especially when editing multiple articles in a row. I've copied most of these abbreviations from other Wikipedians. This is a list of what I mean:
