My main interests so far are: Anglo-Japanese relations, Sir Ernest Satow, Scottish rugby, Japanese rugby, Duncan Gordon Boyes and Cheltenham College. In fact I think I started all these pages, and a few more, though one or two of them anonymously before I settled on the name "Historian".

I have lived in Kitakyushu city in Fukuoka prefecture on the large island of Kyushu, Western Japan since April 1, 1994. I have lived in Japan since April 1, 1988. For my first six years' residence I lived in the Kansai area, in Hyogo prefecture: first in Sumoto on Awaji Island, then in Ashiya and finally in Kobe. Of course I was very lucky to leave Kobe with my wife before the Great Hanshin earthquake of January 17, 1995. I have taught at Kyushu Institute of Technology for just over ten years.

I am an author, and have published two books on Sir Ernest Satow, the first of which has been translated into Japanese. I have also translated a book about Japanese students at Cambridge University in the Meiji era (1868-1912) from Japanese to English. It was published in September 2004 by Lulu Press, a Print on demand (POD) publisher in the USA which is doing its best to empower and assist authors like me, who have become tired of trying to deal with publishers (who either reject manuscripts completely or want to edit them to their satisfaction) and prefer to self-publish, even if it is extra work. Feel free to take a look at my storefront on lulu.com if you like.
