Hello, I am Gabriel Ehrnst Grundin (born October 13, 1983).
Most percieve me as a introverted, erudite, dour martinet. My interests include languages, Europe, history, etc.
I am a former student of Enskilda Gymnasiet. I did my 450-day conscripted tour of duty and I am now a Second Lieutenant ('Fänrik') within the Swedish Armed Forces. In 2004 I began my studies in Physics (Teknisk Fysik) at the RIT (KTH).
Heroes of mine include Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890), Ernst Jünger (1895–1998), Jonas Salk (1914–1995), Orson Welles (1915–1985).
My activites here on Wikipedia mainly focuses on pure "gardening", fixing spelling errors, removing dupes, fixing links, adding metric figures when only imperial units are given, copyediting, etc. But I also like to help people get rid of their prejudices on various topics around the non-Western world, as well as those about lesser known parts of the Western world, and in general, to try and break the overt US-centricism of Wikipedia. Except for that, my interests vary from tall buildings, sights in London, airports & air crashes, bridges, etc.
Political biases which I adhere to:
- Pro-European Union (as well as the Euro, ECHR (including the abolishment of capital punishment), etc.)
- Pro-International Cooperation such as;
- The Metric System over that ridiculous US one...
- Democracy (multiparty, participatory, etc.)
- The United States Constitution (except the Second Amendment, that's archaic, to defend a nation against its agressors one nowadays need tanks and nuclear weapons, not merly pitchforks and fusils)
- Pro-Separation of Church and State (France is a good example on this point, the One Nation, Under God is not)
- The Rule of Law
- The United States Constitution (except the Second Amendment, that's archaic, to defend a nation against its agressors one nowadays need tanks and nuclear weapons, not merly pitchforks and fusils)
- Anti-War (Democratic, Industrial Nations don't wage war on each other, hence improving the economies and ability for people to change their leadership bloodlessly (which in turn will lead to human rights) is the way to reform non-democratic rogue states, and only then can intranational disputes (the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, for instance) be solved; by the pen, not the sword).
In the whole "languages v. dialects" I find myself more to the "dialects"-side than what is currently seems to be predominant on the 'pedia. That is to say, I find myself disagreeing with the Ethnologue and perhaps even the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in that I see separatists or people enganging in petty nationalism when they claim that, for example, Berlin-German is a separate language from Bavarian German in the same sense that Welsh is separate from London English, or that Scanian is as (or more!) different from Stockholm Swedish as Oslo Norwegian is from Stockholm Swedish, etc.
As for Anti-American sentiment, I find its growing presence around Europe disturbing, although I don't see it as being as overwhelming and omnipresent as many would have it. Also, I'm not only opposed to it based on my love for all things American, I certainly have my reservations as for foreign policy decisions, etc. I think the article Living with a superpower in the January 3, 2003 issue of The Economist is a good start.
People whose opinions matter to me:
- Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
- Karl Popper (1902–1994), The Open Society and Its Enemies
- Noam Chomsky (born 1928)
People who can form sentences in a way that moves me:
- Patrick Henry (1736–1799)
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832), Ein gleiches (Wandrers Nachtlied)
- Douglas Hofstadter (born 1945)
Artists who I believe have profoundly changed the way in which we see the world:
- History: George Washington (born February 11, 1731 (O.S.) (February 22, 1732 (N.S.)))
